Food Security
The World Food Summit of 1996 defined food security as existing “when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life”. Commonly, the concept of food security is defined as including both physical and economic access to food that meets people’s dietary needs as well as their food preferences.
Food security is built on three pillars:
Food availability: sufficient quantities of food available on a consistent basis.
Food access: having sufficient resources to obtain appropriate foods for a nutritious diet.
Food use: appropriate use based on knowledge of basic nutrition and care, as well as adequate water and sanitation.
An estimated 14.5 percent of American households were food insecure at least some time during the year in 2012, meaning they lacked access to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members.
Although children are usually protected from substantial reductions in food intake even in households with very low food security, nevertheless, in about 1.2 percent of households with children (463,000 households), one or more child also experienced reduced food intake and disrupted eating patterns at some time during the year.
In the hopes of turning the tide on hunger in our communities I have been searching for groups and organizations who are trying to make a difference. One group that I have come to love is Feed My Sheep. FMS is a compact but effective Outreach Group of individuals who truly want to make a difference. The group was founded on the Scripture where Jesus stated to His followers ” To Feed His Sheep”.
